There are moments in life that divide everything into before and after. For me, that moment wasn't the launch of a business or the publication of a book. It wasn't opening restaurants, building campgrounds, or traveling across the country. It was hearing three words that changed everything: 'You have cancer.' In an instant, life stopped being about tomorrow and became about today. Suddenly, I wasn't thinking about the next project or the next goal. I was thinking about the people I loved most my incredible partner, my devoted mother, and my son. I found myself asking a question that many people facing life's greatest challenges eventually ask: 'What will I leave behind?' Money comes and goes. Buildings eventually belong to someone else. Businesses change hands. But memories can last forever. That realization became the beginning of something far greater than a game. It became the beginning of Surviving the Unknown™.
More Than a Game
Barbara started the idea in June 2025
Most people see a scavenger hunt. Some see a paranormal adventure. Others see cash prizes, hidden artifacts, and mysterious riddles. They're all right but those things aren't the real purpose. The real treasure has never been the Golden Owl. The real prize has never been the money. The greatest reward is watching families step away from their screens, laugh together, solve mysteries together, and create stories they'll tell for the rest of their lives.
A Lesson I Never Wanted to Learn
Long before my own diagnosis, cancer had already touched my family. I watched two of my aunts lose their battles with this terrible disease. When my own diagnosis came, I understood something most of us try not to think about: none of us are promised tomorrow. That realization didn't make me want to quit. It made me want to build something that could outlive me something that would continue bringing joy to families long after I was gone.
Why Adventure Matters
Somewhere along the way, we've stopped talking to one another. Families sit together while staring at separate screens. Children know how to navigate social media but have never followed a compass through the woods. I wanted to create something that gently pulled families back together not through lectures, but through adventure. Imagine your daughter solving the first clue while your son searches beneath an old bridge. Imagine everyone laughing because Dad walked past the hidden artifact three times before Mom finally spotted it. Those are the moments that matter
History Has Stories Waiting to Be Discovered
Every investigation in Surviving the Unknown™ takes players somewhere real historic towns, forgotten ruins, beautiful springs, mysterious forests, and places surrounded by legends and local folklore. Every clue encourages families to explore places they might never have visited and to learn the incredible history hidden in their own communities.
The Legacy I Hope to Leave
When I began creating Surviving the Unknown™, I wasn't thinking about building the next big game. I was thinking about my family. If something happened to me, I wanted my partner, my mother, my son and grandchildren to know that every decision I made was rooted in love.
I wanted to build something that would continue caring for them. But I also wanted to leave behind something that couldn't be measured in dollars a reason for families to spend time together, laugh, explore, unplug, and reconnect.
A Tradition for Generations
My dream is simple. One day, parents who played Surviving the Unknown™ will introduce it to their own children. Families won't remember every clue or every artifact but they'll remember the adventures, the road trips, the campfires, and the excitement of finding something hidden together. Those memories become traditions. Traditions become legacies. An Invitation Life moves faster than any of us realize.
One day your children are asking you to play. The next, they're grown. Don't wait for the perfect time. Take the trip. Explore the forgotten places. Solve the riddles. Laugh when you get lost. Celebrate when someone finds the hidden artifact. Because years from now, you probably won't remember what you bought but you'll never forget the adventures you shared.
